Closest cylinder/piston/plug on your right.

Yes. Trunk side of the engine, just above the alternator.

The firing order, in case you need it, is 123456. Simple enough to remember for even me...

For my 88 and 86 its this one. The above picture might be the same but my eyes understand this one better. To me it looks like 1 is in the wrong position....needs to be moved down a spot on the distributer. Then just work your way around.
When we first got the 88 it was missing so bad I thought they had the wires on wrong. The above picture messed me up until I found this one.

For the Fiero it really doesn't matter where #1 on the distributor is located as long as the engine is at TDC and the #1wire is connected to the terminal the rotor button is pointing at and other plug wires run in sequence.

What he said, but I understand what you are saying. I had both schematics. The one I posted popped up first. It just depends on where the rotor is when you install the distributor. It should be close to the 5 or 6 o'clock position for the best results as there isn't a lot of room around the distributor body to be able to rotate it. Unless you have custom ignition wires like I do, cut to different lengths, you could also move them around on the distributor cap as long as you kept the firing order correct, and are at true TDC and not 180 degrees out.

Orientation of the distributor body is important though. The ICM harness wires are difficult to disconnect if the distributor is turned wrong. I have also encountered interference of the cap hold down screw and a threaded stud on the lower intake when adjusting timing.
