84 fiero loss of speed (Page 1/1)

84 iron duke 4 speed

As far as i can remember my fiero would go 60 mph on 4th gear at 3K rpm. And it would reach 80 at 4k rpm
Now it goes around 53 mph at 3k rpm and around 70+ at 4k rpm at 4th gear

What speeds do other people get at same RPMs?

What could cause loss of top speed??

Could an old clutch cause loss of speed? ( my clutch is about 9 years old or 70k miles)

Could the transmission itself cause loss of speed?

What common parts could be replaced to fix?

It feels the same just slower.

Have you made sure the new tires you got were the same size as the old ones? If they are larger that can change what your speedometer reports compared to actual speed.

With your engine revving about 3000 RPM while going up a slight incline, floor the accelerator while in 4th gear. If the engine revs increase, but the car doesn't seem to be accelerating all that much, I suspect your clutch (disc and pressure plate) are toast.

randomly here some kinda whistling sound or what sound like farts. its not loud, it very subtle.
Can be just air intake by engine and normal.
84-86 4 cyl uses a pipe from intake to exhaust to heat air so TBI can't freeze. Many are missing some to all of this part.
If all there, a vacuum "switch" flips between normal to heated and back based on intake air temp.

what causes loss of speed??
Several things but Not could an old clutch cause loss of speed

Slipping clutch won't last long and stop working at all likely very soon. Worse can fry the flywheel.

Does it need transmission oil? how do i check it? how do i change it? what type of oil for trans?? Likely no, not sure check/change right now, Syncromesh oil.

Is there any reason to change away from 5w-30 engine oil?? engine No. trans yes See my Cave, Manual Trans Fluid
