84 A/C Wiring (Page 1/1)

Hi guys, new to the forum but heard this is the place to ask questions, Little bit about me, former saab mech and lifelong gearhead. Save classics from being scrapped in my spare time. Currently I have an 84 SE that I'm fully restoring to give to my son. Swapping out the auto for the Isuzu 5-speed while it's in the shop and found the a/c wires were cut just short of where the compressor was. The compressor and mounting brackets were also missing. Currently, all I have hanging there are three wires, two are cut off (a green and a yellow) then a black which I assume which goes to a grounding post, since it has a circular connector crimped on the end. Isn't there a low and a high pressure wire set thats suppose to be there too?
I have an 86 harness which has five wires running down, sort of what I expected on the 84. Can anyone tell me what is suppose to be there? I have a new 86 compressor and mounting brackets which I want to install, thought I could spice in the new pressure switches and be done. Thanks in advance.

From the 84 service manual...

Yeah, I have that but I don't see any low and high pressure switch wires running to the compressor, plus I have a yellow wire which is running with the green, and my black goes to a grounding post somewhere by the compressor. To me this is clear as mud right now. Anyone have any pics of what their 84 wiring looks like?

Sounds like it's time to get the meter out and figure out how the wiring has been hacked up.

With your experience you should be able to put it right.

If you like, I can post up the 86 diagrams later today.

Thanks for the offer for the 86 diagram, I do have one already. The 84 schematics don’t align with what I have in person, but the harness looks complete except for where the compressor wires have been cut. It’s only the last 6-8” that are missing and the green wire and the yellow wire look like they are originally the leads for the missing connector. I’ve got a spare 86 connector with the diode but obviously different colors.

Perhaps you should ring out the wires with a meter and determine where the wires in question originate, using the FSM diagram as a clue.

You could then reconstruct the OEM wiring to get the system operational again.

Yeah, not looking forward to it. I am surprised there isn’t low and high pressure switch wiring in the schematic though. I heard a few came that way, but not a mention of it in the big manual is kinda shocking.

The system uses a pressure cycling switch on the separator bottle and a high pressure cutout after the clutch plug.

The air conditioning system is the most poorly documented part of the car in the original literature.
