Would a 5speed GT transmission be a simple swap to an 85 v6? (Page 1/1)

Looking to upgrade/replace the stock 4 speed in my 85. Was wondering if it would be as easy as dropping the current four speed and replacing it with a 5 speed.

Yes, all Fiero transmissions are interchangeable.

Some things that are specific to the transmissions are:

Transmission mount brackets. I believe each of the manual transmissions has at least 1 specific mounting bracket. The rubber mounts are the same throughout.

The 4-speed Muncie and the 5-speed Isuzu share the same slave cylinder. The Getrag 5-speed has a different slave and shorter pushrod.

Each transmission has its own set of cables. The cable mounts include the slave mount while the 4-speed has a separate slave mount.

The shifter of the 4-speed is different from the 5-speeds. Either 5-speed shifter will work with a 5-speed transmission.

Each transmission has a specific clutch release bearing but the clutch plate and pressure plate are the same for each transmission.

You will need to rewire your backup light. The 85 light switch is inside the console on the shifter. The 5-speed switches are on the transmission.

(Leave the 4-speed shift pattern on the console. It may help prevent a theft if they can't find reverse.

I did this swap back in 2000......The transmission mount BRACKETS are specific, and the cables and shifter are also specific....

Fierofool, I actually thought of that and left it that way for 15 years but then bought a sticker from Rodney to make it right (For smog check and tire shop guys)....

So for anti-theft, I now have....This:
