I know I have posted about this before, but when I did, I was in the middle of rebuilding the whole rear end and engine of my '88 and didn't have time to pursue it. I had been told that the problem was most likely my tach filter, so I installed a new one. The old one was messed up. Looks like it got too hot.
So, when I installed the new one, I made sure the heat shield was in the correct position to protect it and that there was nothing around it so I could provide the best airflow.
But the new tach filter did not solve the problem. At idle, I read around 1500 or so rpm, when I know the engine is not turning anywhere near that speed. When I am on the freeway, it is reading close to pegged and when I downshift, like for passing, it pegs.
I installed a new distributor during the rebuild, as the old was pretty messed up -- rusty and arcing under the cap and a few other things. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Fiero tachs read high as they begin to fail....it's a common problem. One way to get it fixed is to contact forum member J Gunsett for a rebuild. [This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 12-13-2021).]

Thanks for the information. I will most likely need to contact him and get it done. The tach filter made no difference whatsoever.
