Engine sawp (Page 1/1)
Brantley 14 DEC 09, 05:07 PM
Hey guys so my cam shaft broke in half on my stock 2.8 v6 in my 87’ GT and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for what swap I should do for it and maybe a sort of base price idea. Thank you.

Why would you want to change it? You now have a dual cam engine....

Maybe tell us what you want to get out of the swap; performance, fuel efficiency, reliability, etc. What is your budget? What is your skill level?

This question has been asked thousands of times here, so you can probably get better information by doing a search first.

I’m not really looking for too much of a performance impact because of my budget. I’m not too picky about fuel efficiency but I would like for it to be pretty reliable. My budget would be around 2k. My skill level with things like building engines and swapping them are very low.

For that budget the 3.4L P/R swap would be the cheapest IF you could find a good 93-95 Camaro/Firebird unit and if your clutch is good. You will need the 88 or the 3.4L TDC Flywheel but you will use the 2.8L ECM and wiring harness.Small adjustments to the program are usually required For the auto swap the 93-95 4.9L Cadillac would probably be the cheapest for the greatest power gain. With a couple of small changes the 4.9L powertrain will bolt in right in but you will need to rewire the harness. If you DIY you can do that swap for well under $1.5K and under $2K if you buy a harness. .

I just had my engine rebuilt and in the process had them put a mild cam in it -- nothing wild because I had to pass CA emissions testing. I will see if I can find the specs on it.

A word of advice, and maybe you already know this, but there may have been some damage done to other parts of the engine. You will need new cam bearings and while you have the engine down, I would also put new hydraulic lifters in it. I don't know how many miles you have on the vehicle, but I would also look at replacing the timing chain and gears. As you look into the engine, look at the harmonic balancer. Mine had slipped and the timing mark was several degrees off and the rubber was pretty badly mangled. I don't want to sound "doomsday" but once I got my engine out and looked at it, I figured it was truly time for a rebuild. I went from, "Oh, I'll just change out the leaking gaskets" to a full rebuild.

Another thing, if you do replace the cam, lifters, etc., I would treat the engine like a new rebuild and use high zinc oil for a proper break-in. Keep off the accelerator for the first 500 miles, change the oil and filter, using high zinc oil again, and drive it for another 500, only occasionally getting on it and avoid freeway speeds for sustained periods. After this second 500 miles, change the filter and to whatever oil you plan on using in the engine and change it out, too. Then just do regular maintenance on it.

If you swap your engine, then all this means nothing, but not sure you can do an engine swap with a 2K limit. Others in here can speak to that better than I can. I once swapped a 280Z engine into a BMW 530i, but I owned both cars and had a lot of stuff that I needed already. It still cost me close to a grand to do it, though. Might be easier with the Fiero.

If you adjust your valve lash correctly during the rebuild, you should not need to readjust the valve clearance as the hydraulics will compensate for wear.

I will see if I can find the info on the cam I had put into the engine. I have built other engines, but I wanted a warranty on this one, so I had it done by a builder. He has done engines for decades -- he is close to my age of 71 -- so he and I got along well.

Here is a picture of me next to the V-16 9072 cubic inch engines I used to rebuild. EMD diesels. You're looking at the back end where the turbo is. Great engine!!! Good luck with your project!!

While it is possible, my preference is not for a rebuilt engine. Unless the bore and crank mic out as usable; I have found that the cost of rebuilding often far exceeds the cost of a good condition low mileage engine. Completed assembled Long block crate 2.8L/3.1L's are now selling for up to $2,500.
