Front rotor bearing race question (Page 1/1)

Hi all, I have a question about bearing races:
I just bought new front brake rotors, seals and inner and outer wheel bearings for my 85 GT. I opened up one of the boxes that had one of the rotors in it and I was surprised to see that not already had races installed in it. I thought the rotors would come more naked. Anyways, my new bearings come with races as well. So, my question is….Does it matter which race I use with the new bearing? (the one already installed in the rotors or is the one that comes with the new bearings part of a matched set?

Often, in tapered roller bearings, the "bearing" and "race" are packaged and sold separately.

In the specific case of the 84-87 Fiero front wheel bearings, Rockauto does sell bearings and races individually. Rockauto also sells complete sets, but that may be for convenience.

Based on the sale of individual bearings and races, it looks like it is OK to mix and match.

However, I am not knowledgeable in this domain. Ideally someone more qualified will chime in.

Be sure to check the rotors and make sure the races do not turn in the hub. The last time I replaced my front rotors one of them had a race the was loose in the hub. I could pull the race out with just my fingers. Replaced with a Timken race which needed to be tapped into the hub like normal.
Just an FYI.

You can just use inner set w/ outer race installed or drive out the unknown race.
To drive new outer you need a bearing driver set or likely wreck the race.

Either way... Need to properly install the hub on spindle... Too loose or any preload will ruin the bearings.
