What to do when my motor is out (Page 1/1)
Additivewalnut DEC 15, 02:03 AM
I'm gonna be dropping the 2.8 out for a refresh. Lots of oil leaks, figured I'd replace all my gaskets and check up on my bearings. While it's out though, what should I do?

I plan on cleaning up all the cob webs and wasp nests in the engine bay and maybe getting rid of that horrible fiberglass insulation, but what to do to the motor? Throw a cam in it? Swap it to a 3.4?

If I go the cam option, the fierostore sells a 260 but I've seen some talk about a 272? I wouldn't hate for the ol fiero to have a lopey idle.

It's also getting a rebuilt distributor, should I do anything special with that? Is there any merit to MSD stuff?

I just went through a total rebuild on my '88 for the same reasons. I did a total rebuild on the rear suspension, too. Had the engine done by a builder for a warranty. Mild cam, slight overbore, larger valves with hardened seats, etc. Couldn't go wild as I live in CA and have to pass smog. If you need some help, PM me and I will see what I can do. If you haven't replaced any bushings in the rear end, I would plan on doing this. Mine were totally shot. I came up with a very easy way to remove old bushings. If you need to do this, let me know and I will send you pix of how to do it. Attached is a photo of the cam specs I have. Good luck...

That is a very open question to ask. There are many different options to take. What is the goal you have in mind?

My goal is just a little more fun and a little more reliability. Which is why I've considered mild cams and such for that little boost of power but nothing insane.
