Greetings Folks,

1986 Fiero GT, 5 Speed Manual Tranny.

Speedometer recently stopped working.

Can someone show me a pic or diagram of the location of the Speedometer sending unit for this car.

Thanks Kindly!

The speed sensor (VSS) is on the transmission. The first thing to check is the connector to see if it lost contact. Do a SEARCH for VSS and find more information than you will ever need.... ....be sure to include the archives.

It will be on top of the trans above the passenger side axle.
This is typical on all the manual transmissions.

Dont drive it! The gear may have fell off into the tranny. It may be gone already.

If you remove the VSS to check for the presence of the plastic gear, lift the VSS out very slowly. The gear has very little clearance coming out and if still present, can hang and be pulled off. I have lost plastic gears and even though I got a very loud bang when it got caught in one of the steel gears, it did no damage. Not saying it won't, but my transmission suffered none and as far as I know, the car is still operating. That was 8 or 10 years ago.

I've had problem with my speedo. Its only starts registering at times when I hit 30mph. Is the is loose gear issue?
