Installing a front camera (Page 1/2)
ceverhart DEC 27, 12:11 AM
Hey all,

I think I am going to install a front camera on my car and I have a good idea where I am mounting it and how I will route wires. The area I am having trouble with is where to tap into for power. I want to use this while parking to make sure I don't wreck the front bumper....so that said what do you all think the best power source will be?

Thanks!!

The fuse box.......use one of the extra IGN sockets provided.

Thanks.....I guess I was over complicating it by trying to think of a good power source under front hood....never even considered running it back to fuse panel.

Relocate your battery to the front compartment!!!

Good reason to do it

I agree that moving the battery up front is a worthwhile endeavor... but I wouldn't consider the mounting of a front camera as any reason for doing so.

The battery to the front is an option. I have been gathering the needed 3800 swap parts. I need to send my harness cores out to have it that made and then I need my clutch. I have the engine and mounts and most of the misc parts.

Where in the front would you mount it? If it's on the exterior it would probably be to low to be of any use.(except for parking). Inquiring minds need to know.

For parallel parking or other reason when need better clearance tools for Fiero...
Just turn on Headlights. HL doors open are about 1 foot behind tip of bumper.

Any camera, like "dash cams," mounted by/"behind" rear view mirror nearly to tip of "bumper."
Many Dash Cams have Bluetooth so can view on phones or whatever.

If your worried hitting curbs etc... Need about same setup as rear view cameras that's mounted low to see low and very close thing.

But...

⚠️ Warning:
Using Phones or Video in the car by drivers can cause legal problems.
You saying video is for better parking may not matter picky cop writing tickets. May not matter in many courts if you fight a ticket too.
Why OEM and properly install aftermarket rear view cameras are only on when backing up.
And big part of why most Dash Cams w/ screen turn off the screen by default a few second to 1 minute after booting.

Even w/ dash cams, EZpass, and related things... Anything attach to the windshield can be a ticket problem too.
Is Why EZpass say mount the transponder "behind" rear-view mirror. Is high and doesn't block driver view. I mount Small Dash Cams same way then try to keep the wire a bit hidden too. (Because Anything hanging off the mirror can have same problem.)
In many newer cars... Besides OEM windshield tinting they "paint" windshield there too and made the area easy to hind EZpass and small Dash Cams from outside too.

Worse, these issues aren't uniform even in one state because many cities have extra laws covering them or that city is more "strict" enforcing state laws.
Also these "violations" can have Fines and also Points depending on State.
