87 GT Idling Issue (Page 1/1)

We purchased an 87 GT earlier this year and are now having idling issues. It will jump between 1200 and 1800 RPM randomly. We've replaced the EGR tube. The original had a crack and was causing the idle to stay between 2000 and 2500 RPM. We've also replaced the IAC valve and the TPS. The throttle adjustment has not been messed with and it appears the catalytic converter has been replaced recently. We've considered replacing the distributor cap, plugs and wires but wanted to see if anyone here had any suggestions first. I've got a short video here showing how it's running. Also should I be concerned about the exhaust? Seems a little white. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/p5db93iIvBg

That engine is missing badly. When's the last time the spark plugs (all six of them) were checked?

White smoke is fine, as long as your coolant level isn't dropping. White smoke is usually just condensation in the exhaust system burning off. At this time of year, white smoke billows out of the tailpipes of cars located in cool damp regions. When I'm at a stoplight before my Formula is warmed up, I can barely see the car behind me in my rear-view mirror due to all the "smoke" (actually steam).

I've no idea when the spark plugs were last checked. We're going to replace them tomorrow. Hopefully that will help.

If the spark plugs haven't been changed for years, it might be best to soak them all down for a couple of days with a quality penetrating oil (not original WD-40) after cleaning any accumulated crap out from around the plugs. The three forward facing plugs can be a b!tch to remove (due to corrosion) if anti-seize wasn't used during their installation.

Thanks for your advice Patrick. You were right the plugs were a complete pain to remove. We got all the plugs, wires and distributor cap replaced and it's running a lot smoother now. Once we put it into gear (automatic), the engine instantly shuts off. After doing a little searching we tried unplugging the TCC solenoid and that did not help.

Have you checked the ignition timing... with the ALDL jumper in place?
