Replacing Muffler - anyone know the procedure to get the @#!s Support Springs back on (Page 1/2)
lodcomm DEC 29, 07:02 PM
Greetings Folks,

I am in the process of replacing the muffler on my 86 Fiero/Ferrari Project car. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to Re-attach the six supporting springs (3 on each end of the muffler in a trident pattern). In fact they were a (&*^@#ch to get off!

Is there any trick or procedure someone could point me to that describes how to re-install these guys? Is there some kind of special tool? I cannot imagine what it would even look like

Please help me Pennocks gang... you're my only hope!

thanks in advance for ANY ideas you can offer..

Honestly... I just left them off. The only springs I have attached are the ones on both sides of the catalytic converter. Havent had any problems from doing that so far, Ive had them off for more then a year now.

Thanks kindly for the Idea:

I would like to do that - I have to have the car inspected for the Composite title - If the guys at CT DMV see them missing they will fail it.

If no-one knows the process for re-attaching the springs, I suppose I could die cut and grind off the spring hooks on the ends of the muffler and feign ignorance

thanks!

Damn, there's a tool for that? I just used various screwdrivers, pliers and assorted swear words.

Actually, to be honest, I didn't find it all that bad. After having done it a few times, I just learned which ones to do first to make the rest of the job easier. And no, I can't tell you at the moment exactly what I did.

I use a pair of needle-nose visegrips, and a screwdriver.......Before you start, count your fingers- that way you can keep score. A french dictionary may help also....

An old pair of brake shoe spring pliers might work, too.

I couldn't wait to get one from Rodney so I bought one from O'Reilly's and it worked great. Makes it very easy to remove any high tension or hard to reach springs.

I also use the brake shoe spring pliers for the springs.

+1 for this too

The muffler spring plate bolts on i put the springs then bolted it in place with the cradle out. My cats have been adapted to bolt in makes starter work and ac work easy. The springs get tight once i tighten the bolts on the cat.
