Syncromesh questions (Page 1/1)
David Riedle JAN 30, 02:36 PM
I will be replacing the gearbox oil of my 84 indy with genuine GM Syncromesh gearbox oil.

I have used Syncromesh in the past in a Tremac gearbox, and loved how the gearbox shifted.

My question is this…do I use the standard Syncromesh, 10-4006, or the friction modified Syncromesh, 10-4014? Locally, I have four answers, two for the 10-4006, and two for 10-4014. No one I trust has a definitive answer.

I think I should purchase 3 quarts of the original 10-4006, but would like advice.

Many thanks!

Friction modifier is usually for use with limited-slip differential clutch packs, or similar materials I suppose. The Muncie has normal brass synchro rings, and no limited-slip differential.

I have Redline MTL oil in my Muncie... mostly because that's what my semi-local tuning shop sells, and I like it. I use that same oil in my Ford Ranger.

Interesting, I used that in a 70's GM dogleg T-50, chose it due to recommendation for the brass syncros.

What I never got a clear understanding or answer for the M17 Muncie 4-speed is, what the GLS stands for?

They changed the terminology in 1986.5 to STF/MTF and I know syncromesh is what everyone uses as replacement.

I didn't want to go that route and was considering 5w30 racing without detergents... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jgr-01906

Does anyone know what the original recommend fluid GLS definition is/was for the 1985-86 V6 Muncie 4-speed?

I always ran Mobil One 5w30 synthetic. Never had an issue and shifted much better than the OEM fluid .

Just bumping this back up because I think the GLS was abbreviation for Gear Lube Special, but I could be wrong.

Upon narrowing down my choices I stumbled across this recent thread on Reddit, funny for me to see outside PFF...

I always forget there is a Fiero world outside PFF since I don't do FB, its toxic and really hurt many high functioning automotive forum communities.

Strong ones like The Samba for the global VW air-cooled community show why message boards are better and higher functioning than social media platforms.
