86 Isuzu (Page 1/1)

So my 17 year old son brought home a " real gem"......
I'm new here so if I post in the wrong place I'll repost ,just let me know.. iron Duke runs good. I'm almost positive it's the Isuzu trans.. can't shift into any gears. 5spd.. almost like the clutch isn't engaging. I replaces the pedal with no luck. Any way to check ? Where should I go from here? I've got a manual, but not able to troubleshoot it from here. Any tips or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! P.s. Single father here not really interested in a LS4 swap or anything crazy! I'm on a budget ... thank you for your help

Welcome. This can be a great Father/Son joint venture.

Since you replaced the pedal, you might want to check that the master cylinder pushrod is curled upward, and not downward. That's a common mistake. Do this first before starting the bleeding procedure.

Have your son press the clutch pedal while you observe the clutch slave cylinder pushrod. A common Fiero clutch issue is the slave cylinder. If it isn't moving or moves just a little, bleed the system. Don't use multiple pumps. Fill the reservoir, open the bleeder and have your son depress the pedal just 1 time and hold it to the floor while you close the bleeder. Repeat this 3 or 4 or 5 times, keeping the reservoir topped off. If you still don't get release, look for fluid loss underneath the pushrod boots for both the master and slave cylinders.

Because you're new to Fieros, save this chart to file and print it out for your own use and to give any garage whenever you have someone else service the car where it may need to be lifted. I think this came from FieroJon. The rocker panels and the coolant tubes just behind them are major concerns for damage when lifted improperly.

Thank you sir!! That's a great starting point. I know about the jacking issues, had a fiero in high school(1000 years ago).. I only had it for a couple months before the engine blew.. if I knew then what a cool car it was.... oh well.... I'll definitely get started this weekend. Again thank you for the advice!!!!

First off. Does the shifter work through the gears with the engine off? If not the problem may be with the shifter or cables. If the shifter is free then move on to the clutch system checking the master and slave cylinders, the MC rod install or the clutch fork. The Fiero manual system is problematic. It can be done other ways but I recommend bleeding the system using a vacuum bleeder. We have had good results with that method. If that doesn't help the problem is probably a leaky master and/or slave cylinder. The aftermarket quality varies widely. The most reliable ones are sold by Rodney Dickman.
Also understand that the Duke engines while very reliable don't like revving above 4500 RPM especially on a 35 year old engine.
