Replacing Tie Rod Ends With Heim Joints (Page 1/1)
Flyer70 FEB 10, 01:05 PM
I would like to flip the tie rod ends on an 87 Fiero and replace with Heim Joints. Can anyone that has done this before please point me in the right direction. Thanks

Not sure what the big gain would be.

Ball joints and tie rod ends have a tapered stud to fit into the corresponding suspension component.
You'd have to drill all the components out to accept a bolt which may then not hold as snugly over time.

Make this unapproved modification, get into an accident and you will find out that you have just voided your auto insurance. If you are required to have state inspection and you don't have it this also voids your policy. Point is that auto insurance companies will try to avoid claims in every way possible.

Is a very bad idea on many levels even if the car is a Trailer Queen "Race Car" never drive on public roads. Many Race Org ban them and will not pass track inspection.
If they look under your car, is likely Illegal and won't pass Alberta Inspection for street use. In A lot of places Many Inspector do get under the car and Instant Fail for many things.

Fierosound is right about the stud and hole in the knuckle. The Taper take nearly 100% of load at that joint. The nuts for anything using Tapers only just keep the taper tight.

Ball end is a "sealed" part and a lot more area to spread loads when to hit a pothole, RR tracks, etc. If you don't feel you hit them is likely only because the steering stabilizer is still working. All ball joints and rest of suspension still gets hit w/ small or very big Sledgehammer Forces.

Even when a boot is bad, That and grease often will keep water and crap out unless completely torn out.
Moog and some others are many much better then GM OE.

See my Cave, Suspension Parts many parts hard to get but moog # should be cross ref or find still in stock @ some places.

Funny hearing you saying that...
