Auxilliaary Gauge cluster pod removal from dash (Page 1/2)

I have a 1987 GT with the auxiliary Batery and oil temp gauge cluster. I want to remove the gauge cluster entirely (temporarily) so I can restore the dash board behind the cluster. I have removed all the screws (I think that attaché the cluster to the dash surround. The only thing remaining is the cable connector. I can’t seem to be able to lift the cluster upwards to remove it. It wiggles but seems to resist any upwards removal effort.

Can anyone help? The metal frame that attaches to the cluster underneath appears to have several bends as it enters the dash frame. There must be a solution to this removal I am missing. Again any help would be appreciated.

You must remove the shifter surround, the trim for the HVAC / radio surround, and the the HVAC surround to access the 7mm head screws that hold the bracket to the Aux Gage cluster.

Ok, did not mention what I have removed so far. Front face plate, Screws that hold Gauge bracket to the radio / HVAC. So far 4 screws that hod bracket to radio HVAC surround plus two more that screw into the ax gage cluster. All that is left that I can see is two screws under neath aux cluster that hods cluster to the bracket which I cannot access , and the harness connector that is still attached. The cluster wiggles and moves a bit but I can’t lift upwards to pulll it free. I have not exerted force for fear of damage. If I remove the two screws that hold the A/c duct to the entire radio HVAC surround perhaps that may free it. I just wanted to be careful and ask for advice.

Thanks for your help. I will try and remove the wire connector and see if I can pull it upward and out.

The upholstered trim piece around the HVAC must come off.
There are three fasteners along the bottom, under the shifter surround.

To access the gauge harness, remove the 2 screws that hold the lens to the gauge. You can pull the gauge out of its surround housing and unplug the harness. Then the rest is as described by others.

Ok guys, I think I see the pathway here. I have to remove the decorative radio/HVAC/ etc. decorative surround to be able to remove the gauge cluster. I thought by just removing the gauge bracket screws (6) the cluster would just lift upwards. That doe not happen. I will now remove the decorative surround via under the shifter console plate. If wrong here let me know. They sure did make it difficult.
