Flywheel for 2.8 (Page 1/2)

Hi, I want to swap out my auto for a 5 speed (Yes I know it's a lot of work) I'm having a hell of a time finding a flywheel for my 86 GT with the 2.8L. I was wondering if anyone knew if the flywheel from an 86 s10 will work? S10 flywheels are both plentiful and cheap. I am aware that there are two versions of the 2.8L, one for transverse (Fiero) and one for inline(s10), and one of the differences may be the flywheel. Any info on the subject will be appreciated. Thanks

For pre 87 (up until late 87) you need an externally balanced flywheel. In late 87 they swapped to internal balance on the crank . This means for late 87 and all 88 you can buy a fly wheel off the shelf as they are neutral balance.

One thing you might be able to do is buy the 88 flywheel and have a performance machine shop match balance it to its original automatic flexplate. I've done that before on other external balanced engines.

Some good stuff on that site. The flywheel they list is for the 88 and later engines, not for the earlier externally balanced crankshafts.

My flywheel isn't burned, heat-cracked, or scored. Came out of my 86SE. I went to a 3.1 and had to buy a flywheel for an internally balanced engine.

$50 plus shipping of your choice.

I'd jump on that!

wouldn't op still have to get it balanced to their specific engine?

I don't think so. At one time, a replacement externally balanced V6 flywheel was available but since 88 on, there were sooo many internally balanced 2.8 / 3.1 V6's produced, I imagine the smart money was on an aftermarket internally balanced version. The pre 88 external balance automatic flexplate is still available.

As for my original inquiry- The s10 flywheel won't work. I found out that it is 12.4" and 148 teeth as compared to the Fiero's 12" and 142 teeth. I'm posting this in case anyone else gets the same idea.
