A few electrical issues (Page 1/1)

Hello again, sorry to bother so soon after my last post, but I've got a few more questions and I've yet to find answers in the Search here on PFF or other forums.

Firstly, there is a faint buzzing noise in my engine bay when I have my battery connected, with IGN off/key out. Once the battery is disconnected the noise stops. By ear it seems to be coming from the trunk side, but its not from the ICM, and I can't tell if its coming from my alternator. When I get the car jacked up again in a couple days(i messed up my leg snowboarding on friday ) I will hopefully have a better idea what its coming from, but until then if yall have ideas i'd love to hear.

Second, on the passenger side of my trunk under the carpeting(on the upper "shelf" wall) I found a short harness with a connector for a 4 pin relay identical to the fuel pump or A/C relay connectors, alongside a 2 pin white connector. I have no idea what these are for, as there are no other connections i can see within reach.

Finally, my handbrake/trunk release. A previous owner swapped to grand am brakes(from what i've been told and from some paper records that came with the car) and in doing so, I don't have a handbrake anymore. The handle and connector are still in place, but the cable is gone. This hasn't been much of an issue since I park it in 1 or R depending on the slope, and it didn't interfere with my trunk release until now. Suddenly my handbrake light is on perpetually until i turn the key to the ON position.(key out the light is on) The trunk release button no longer works, and seemingly randomly, when i turn the key from ON to OFF the trunk pops open. It doesn't happen every time, but the majority of times it does. When I had my carpeting all up, i found the electrical connector for the handbrake, unplugged. If i touched it to the handbrake side of the connection, the trunk would immediately release. It seems that without the cable in place, the handle can move enough on its own that it will ground out, and the circuit will stay completed. If I kept the connector in place, (which as stated before would pop the trunk) the interior lighting would noticeably dim. I have no idea what is going on with this part.

I'm sorry this is so messy(especially the last topic) if you need further clarification on anything please let me know. I can provide pictures of anything you need as well.

The connector/relay in the trunk under the carpet is for the 'auxillary' cooling fan that blows on the alternator and coil. It comes on when the engine cooling fan is triggered. The ductwork is attached to the two curved tubes on the engine side of the trunk wall.

As to the trunk latch and the parking brake issue, tape off the connector to the parking brake handle.

Aha interesting. I dont have any fan in there, is that bad or largely irrelevant?

With the handbrake unplugged completely, the issue is the video. If i plug it i and just block the contact pad in the handbrake mechanism its identical circuit wise to the current(hah) situation. When i leave the contacts alone and plugged in, with the circuit closed, the trunk will not latch. the release is immediately triggered upon the latch grounding with the hook in the trunk. Isolating anything at the handbrake side leaves me with those 2 scenario(open circuit is the video, closed circuit the trunk wont close)

Check to see if the switch is broken.

Check to see if the relay is stuck.
Relay located under dash, right side of column.

Fan was originally located in the right trunk corner.

It sounds like the buzzing sound in your engine bay is the trunk release solenoid. It is strange that it is coming on when your ignition is off. It is easy to check. Just unplug it and see if the buzzing sound goes away.

I would pull out the trunk release switch and check if something is spliced into the wiring there. If so, start following the wires and try to figure out what is going on.

Ahhhhhhh man i feel stupid. A while ago I had used epoxy to repair my release switch because the post broke off. Looks like it didnt hold. The switch felt normal though, as in it would not push the wrong way, only the correct release way. I think the epoxy was holding the post in place enough that the rocker would not push the wrong way. Switch was stuck closed! Using a pen cap i can operate the switch and things are working as they were before. Thank you!

P.S. The buzzing noise ceased as well. Much appreciated You guys
