Prepping to paint what do I need to know before attempting? (Page 1/1)

After spending some time talking with body shops and not getting much interest from them I'm strongly considering painting some new panels, color changing other small parts & detailing a majority of what has the original paint for my Indy. . Don't know if there is a build thread covering a start/to finish and may consider putting this in the construction or how to section.

New parts - Hood, fuel door & pocket
Donor parts - headlight doors - need paint to matched/refreshed,
Rockers, various colors from donor vehicles,
Original parts - door skins, bumpers, rear body, deck lid & spoiler, fender quarters front/rear
The only parts I plan to leave on the car is the roof and small triangle pieces by the door. These were repainted some time ago and paint condition isn't the greatest - dirt, scratches, chipping.

What step(s) should be taken for the following

New panels? Scuff, seal, prime, paint, etc.

For the roof and headlight doors and other smalls that need color matched what grit/type sandpaper should I be using? After sanding do I need to seal or go direct to primer? Guide coat?

The original panels I'm planning to use 3M's decal eraser wheel to remove the pin stripping, for the most part the panels are decent shape and I would think only a little bit of polishing would be needed.

What materials/brand would you suggest? sandpaper, blocks/tools, sealer, primer, paint?

Painting a car is something I've not done before, suggestions & comments appreciated.
