Oil filter Question (Page 1/1)

I was going to change the oil on my '85 Fiero. It's currently at my parents house, so I can;t crawl under it and look, so here is my question. I have the Iron duke. How do I know if I need a standard oil filter, like the one autozone claims I need, or one of those cartridge based ones? And if I need one of those where do I get it?

It's a standard filter.... In the future if you need to know what you need you can use an online parts supplier to look up your info....try Rock Auto . com

I had looked it up, but I had seen some video where someone had a filter with the material exposed, and all the ones on AutoZone and O'reileys looked normal, so I just wanted to make sure, but it turns out there's a series on YouTube by a guy names Ronald Finger who has the exact same model I do, so that answered my question after I had already submitted it.

Many "books" list a Short/Small "Spin On" Oil Filter such as PF47 from GM/ACDelco.

GM replace w/ a Long Filter like PF52 for 84 4cyl as part of Recall work for that year.

Many since use a long filter on all 85-87 Fiero 4 cyl because easier to reach them. Then more confusing, Some Filter Brands only offer a long filter as well.

⚠️ Warning: Many use a wrench to tighten... Often because can't reach to tighten by hand. Do Not use force to tighten this way or can strip the threads and have other problems.

Owner books etc say X oil to fill but that assume you have a Short filter... Long Filters Add a little more Oil capacity to the engine.
So check check dip stick after engine runs first time then turn off after changing

See my Cave, Oil and Filter
Note: GM change contract makers or specs to make oil filters and PF52 now is shorter then old PF52 years back but not as short as PF47.
