Does the idea of "installing new carpet over the old carpet" apply for stock carpet? (Page 1/1)

I am installing an Indy Fiero interior including the carpet. I always read that you should install new carpet over the old carpet, but does this apply to new putting replacement stock carpet in?

I removed the padding and did this, it fit nice and snug and stuff fits. Is this the recommended method? Is this just to reduce sound/noise?

Leaving in the stock carpet can help with sound and cushion. However, this applies more to carpet that doesn’t have the backing installed or in the proper areas. If you found a quality product that has the right backing in all the right areas. It’s not necessary to keep the old.

I'd remove it and install some dyomat/sound deadener on the floors which is much lighter weight and more effective.

I don't think the extra thickness and weight is worth the headache of installing new carpet over the old?

Does the Indy carpet have all of the felt padding and foam molded areas secured to the back of it?

If so, remove the old, if not, put it over the old carpet.

If there areas of padding missing from the Indy carpet, rescue the pieces you need from your old carpet and reuse them.

When you put a new carpet over an old, it makes for a very thick floor covering. That can interfere with the accelerator pedal going to WOT position. I would remove the carpet use Dynamat and then place the new carpet over it.

I have low miles on clock so was nothing wrong with original carpet so i put my new black carpet over the top i don't suggest even buying molded carpet it is so easy to get a perfect finish.

x10

Plus, the new carpet may not lay correctly.
Not to mention, don't you want to get 40 years of 'stank' out of the car??

A back story to this thread is that Three dog bought an Indy and parted it out, keeping the interior, which he is now installing in his other Fiero.

I put new "flat" carpet over the old, left the old in there because it has the molding and padding to smooth out the floor and midtunnel. I would never put new Fiero carpet over old Fiero carpet. Even with a "flat" carpet added I found it hard to mount the plastic trim around the doors.
