3800 exhaust crossover (Page 1/1)

I seem to remember reading at some point about how you can't use a 4spd with a 3800 without modification or you'll run into the crossover tube. Is that true? If so, what do I need to do to the trans or crossover to remedy that?

Yes, the crossover tube must be modified to provide clearance for the shift and select cables when using the 4 speed transmission.

Modified.... with a hammer?

No, there is a lot more to it than that!

Consider the automatic that GM designed to work with the 3800SC. The 4T65eHD. 4 speeds, plenty of strength, adjustable and lightning fast shifts. I also get 27-29 hwy mpg with my setup. No need to try and reinvent the wheel.

My motor didn't come with the auto, and I already have a 4 spd in my car

That's understandable. Then redo the exhaust or if you love the stick consider a 5 speeds for better hwy driving and a good fit. I believe that the later HTOB Getrags (92-94 GM) and F23 5 speed are decent choices and will bolt up but they both require a few mods to the shifter arms. Rodney Dockman makes an adapter kit for the later FWD Getrags.

Forget modifying the crossover. I did my 3800sc by offsetting the shifter bracket that holds the cables. I have pic's and others have done it as well.
I'll try to dig up my pics or ones that others have posted.

Offsetting by welding something or can you just scoot the bracket over somehow?

I found a pic but can't locate the ones showing the completed modification. I'll keep looking. This is the repair bracket you need to get from Rodney Dickman.

https://rodneydickman.com/p...o.php?products_id=63

I installed it with an offset to clear the crossover pipe. I ground down the factory ears that usually break like Rodney mentioned but I mounted a flat piece of stiff aluminum plate on that ground down surface first to give me a wider range for mounting Rodney's bracket further away from the factory location so the shift cables would clear the manifold crossover pipe. I clamped things together with vise grip pliers and did my testing and then drilled holes and used nuts & bolts with loctite to finish the project. Welding may work but I like to take things apart.

If I can find the pics you'll see its not difficult at all.
