Clutch Help (Page 1/1)

Hey guys! I just recently bought a 1985 Fiero and ive been having issues with the transmission. all of a sudden as im pulling onto the highway, i lost all the pressure in my clutch and it stopped going into gear. i have fluid in my master cylinder, but i believe my slave has gone bad. does antbody have any information that might help me out? the car will start with the clutch in, but i cannot put it in gear nor even attempt to grind it in. i can hear the shifter moving the transmission when it is off, so its not that. i also know that the pedal is accurately pushing the master cylinder and there is no leak from it. there is, however, what seems to be a small leak coming from around the slave cylinder area but i cannot 100% confirm this.

A common problem with the Fiero clutch system. It is over 30 years old and has gone through thousands of cycles. Check the fork first, if OK I would replace both the master and slave cylinders with the parts that Rodney Dickman sells and bleed the system of air..

Don't make the mistake of replacing the clutch slave with the usual single-seal replacement. It's crap. Only buy a double-seal replacement slave from Rodney. His clutch masters are nice too, but the slave is critical.

In the future... mention your engine and transmission in your posts, so that we can better focus our advice.

I had a similar symptom with my 86 GT 4spd. It happened all of a sudden, one moment it was working normally the next it felt like I had about half the clutch and I couldn't shift into 1st while stopped. I had to start the engine in first and force the shifts to get home. I found no leaking fluid at either the master or slave cylinders. The problem turned out to be the stamped steel arm that the slave cylinder pushes the rod into. A crack near its clamp had allowed it to bend.

There is a picture of the arm in this post.

Mine wasn't completely broken like the one pictured, it only had the crack that the red arrow is pointing to but it was enough to make it so that there wasn't enough travel to disengage the clutch.

It was a while ago but I think I got a replacement from the Fiero Store that was cast, not stamped steel. The only one I see there now says it's for 4cyl Fieros. It does look like the one I got.
