Headlight Won't go up or down without some help. (Page 1/1)

I have a 1984 Fiero. I recently purchased it and i'm in the process of fixing all the electrical problems and im onto the headlights, they use to not go up or down at all and i've replaced the actuator relays and all the fuses. the right head light works great now and will go up and down no issues, however the right one does not go down or up. I can turn the knob and manually move it up and down. a wierd thing though, is that when the light is in the up position and the i flip the switch to move them down, the one that stays up, will go down automatically after i start to move to knob as if it just needs a little push and then it works going down, but going up is a no go. and i can only turn the knob to make it go up when i have the lights on, otherwise it it is in the close position, i can move the knob but after twisting it, it returns to its original position. Im not sure if the motor is bad or if i just need to open it up and do one of those little repair kits?

any help would be much appreciated as im finding it to be a little difficult to find a new motor for sale right now.

You can buy rebuild kits from Rodney Dickman's site: http://rodneydickman.com/in...be3e54e09a687d426b65

Before you go that route, I would take them apart and clean them out. It could just be gummed up.

If you have to give one headlight motor a manual assist, then its likely that something inside has broken. The Gen 1 motors (84-86) while a bit more difficult to rebuild are rebuildable. Rodney Dickman sells great rebuild kits. The first step is to disconnect the battery, remove the motor and then remove the brush assembly cover. If the springs and brushes are in place in there and not broken a rebuild can be successfully done. Brushes can be replaced, the springs cannot. The process involves taking the motor apart, marking the motor stator coil position, removing the gear and replacing the inserts within it. Sometimes a new gear is needed. Then everything must be carefully re-assembled. If you want a rebuild guide Buddy Craig has some very good videos on You Tube. If you feel uncomfortable rebuilding them seek out Fierofool on this forum. He is the authority on these early motors. While he has semi-retired he might take on a rebuild if he has the time.
