Which transmission 5speed or tweeked automatic (Page 1/3)
Superm1952 MAR 25, 06:21 PM
I have an 86 fiero gt chasis under a lambo countach kit with a v6 and a 5 speed in it. I have the opportunity to purchase an 87 formula with a stage 2 3800 in it with a transmission that has been tweeked says the previous owner. Question is what transmission would you Fiero gearheads use. I have been told by my buddy who test rode it that the thing launches better then his vette. I am concerned with the? amount of work (transmission linkages etc) involved putting the automatic in the 5 peed gt. The 5 speed swap doesn't look like there is that much involved compared to the auto. Can you guys/gals give me your honest input as to what would be the best. I am not looking to launch this countach replica the tires are massive and would probably tear up things pretty good if I did. Thanks in advance for your input. I also have a two post Damark low rise lift to use due to my low ceiling height. Skip

I would use a manual transmission, as shifting gears and engaging/disengaging the clutch is a huge part of what I enjoy about driving a sporty car. Having said that, the Getrag 5-spd may or may not be strong enough to withstand continual abuse with a more powerful engine. As I see it, you have three options...

1) Retain the Getrag and drive in a civilized manner. (No clutch dumps.)
2) Swap in a stronger manual transmission. (Plenty of info on that topic posted here over the years.)
3) Use the automatic transmission... and lose out on a lot of driving fun. (Boresville.)

IIRC, mounting the 3800 to a Getrag 5-speed requires a custom made flywheel. Because the 3800 never came with a manual transmission.

I agree with Patrick.
You want to "drive" your car and gear changing is part of real driving!

As a former drag racer, I greatly prefer the automatic 4 speed in a Fiero. If you want to do WOT runs (on the strip of course) you just mash the pedal to the floor, keep both hands the wheel and hold on. An automatic can also be tuned for shift firmness and optimum shift points.
No doubt there are many here that love the stick and we won't argue about that, but I look at manual transmissions as ancient technology. They are no longer options on most new cars not even on the Corvette.

If you want a modern experience, stay with the 4 speed automatic. If you want a dinosaur get the manual.

I have an 88 Mera with a Series III SC 3800 and a 5 speed Getrag. I have about 10,000 miles on it since the swap and no problems but I don't do burn outs or hard launches. I drive it enthusiastically, WOT acceleration sometimes but no power shifting. In my world real sports cars have 2 doors and 3 pedals.

A question for the O/P.....

Are you considering installing the complete 3800\auto trans drivetrain in the Lambo rebody?
It would be easiest to just swap cradles between the two cars.

If just swapping transmissions, control of the four speed auto a big problem.

A bit of info is missing.
Is the 3800 supercharged? Is the automatic the stock Fiero automatic? Or is it the one that came with the 3800? If that's the case, is it a 4T60E or 4T65E? The 65 is a much revised piece, and is very well suited to the 3800.

I basically have 2 fieros in front of me, The 87 fiero has had the Stage 2 supercharges put in it with an automatic transmission (3800 swapped, 3.0 pulley, s1x cam on e85, stage 3 TEP trans. ).

I have an 86 fiero gt under the kit with a v6 5 speed in it.

Both cars are totally driveable all complete.

Was told the 3800 could be put int0 the kit with the 5 speed with only adding a clutch setup and a retune. My buddy rode the 3800 with auto in it and said I should just swap the entire auto package over into the kit ( I guess you would say cradle pkg for cradle package). Not knowing what it all entails I am not sure which way to go. I am concerned about all the routing etc of the auto cables etc.
THOUGHTS I just don't want to pass up the 3800 setup not sure of trannys. I have been told and I agree if I put the 3800 in the 5 speed and dump the clutch alot..... it will quickly tear up the tranny. Thanks for all and any input on the subject Skip
