SOLVED!
Had it explained on the facebook forum. You DO have to drop alternator in order to use the clamp.

I've read every water pump replacement thread on here and others and I'm still stuck regarding that clamp that holds the timing cover down before you try to pull the pump off.

from this thread:
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum9/HTML/000047.html

Instructions say you don't have to take off the alternator and brackets. And right below those instructions it shows a photo of the water pump ready to be removed with the timing cover clamp installed, but it looks like the alternator and brackets are removed.

Am I seeing this wrong?? I've tried everything to get this clamp to sit close to correct, (Clamp came with new pump purchased from the fiero store) and I can't wrap my head around the instructions vs. the photo that I'm doing something wrong?!!?

The 3 times I have changed out a water pump on my 86 V6 i never used the clamp I was just careful not to disturb the timing cover seal when I removed the pump from the timing cover.

I agree. I assisted in this procedure once and if you know what to expect its a piece of cake. On the other hand if one is not aware of how things are put together and start pulling things apart it could ruin your whole day.
