No start (Page 1/1)

84 fiero base doesnt start. It cranks normally.
Had a mechanic check it.
Said fuel pump and injectors are fine.
Said it had to be something electrical, but he doesnt do that stuff.

What could be the problem?

Thank you.

The 84 only has one injector and it is easy to check. Take off the top of the air cleaner and have someone try to start it while you watch the injector. If it sprays then it should start if you have spark. It bothers me that your post says "injectors" because any mechanic working on TBI should know it has only one; unless that is a typo so then never mind.

Put the air cleaner top back and watch the tach while you crank it; if the tach indicates needle movement around 400 to 500 RPM then the ICM is probably working well enough to start. If so, then check your cap and rotor and spark plugs/wires for spark.
If not, you may need an ICM or trigger coil in the distributor.

Those are the first things to check, anyway.

Pull the center plug wire going from ignition coil to the center of the distributor and leave it within quarter inch to the post and try and start the car. It should arc between the unplugged wire and the post, if it doesn't then it could be a bad coil or bad ignition control module. If it does spark then you can take the distributor cap off and inspect the rotor and the spring loaded pin that is in distributor cap that contacts rotor. If those both look good then you can pull plugs one by one and see if they are sparking as you try and start it. But if that is the case then it is probably not an electrical issue, or somehow the plug wires got swapped and they are sparking at all the wrong times.

It is easy to see fuel spraying out of the single injector when you take the air cleaner off. Another sanity check would be to take air cleaner off and try and start it while spraying in some starter fluid. If it starts then you have a fuel issue. If it still doesn't start you can be fairly certain it is an issue with spark.

If you have no idea when the last time the ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, and ignition module was replaced, I would go ahead and replace that all, you can easily do it yourself and if you buy parts from somewhere like rockauto.com then it will be very cheap. You may want to see if you can find an actual ACDelco ignition control module though, the aftermarket ones are a gamble.

Watch TBI to see if has injector spray is easy.
If not then first is look into Oil Fill port and watch the valve rockers... No move then Timing Gear failed.

If they move then look elsewhere...
1. See my Cave, HE Ignition & Ground "Myth" notes

Note that Ignition can be good But iffy wires icm & ecm can make ecm not seeing good ignition and won't Turn On the Injector.
ECM can see ignition is good but Driver in ECM that runs the Injection can fail.
Look up Noid Light to see Injecter turn on besides having fuel spray.

⚠️ Warning: 84 has a lot of things including many wiring are 84 only.
Don't trust Haynes etc "books."
If can't find 84 data elsewhere alldatadiy.com has most 84 info and came from GM.

Most pages in my cave have wiring but mainly for 85-87 and locations etc maybe different for 84.

you can't get new 84 I-coil. Can get 85-86 but also need new plug sold as a "pigtail" to splice them to old wires.
