3 Disk collector inserts to quiet 3800SC muffler installation!!! (Page 1/2)

FYI: I have converted two Fieros to 3800SC engines, one in my sons 87GT and one in my 88GT, neither has a catalytic converter. Due to the smaller space on the 87GT, I installed the custom Spintek muffler with a 3 inch inlet and dual 2.5 inch outlets to the tail pipes. It has a deeper tone but was still a bit louder than I preferred but he lived with it for several years. Today, while fixing a slight weld crack on the inlet piping at the muffler, I did an experiment and installed a 3 disk collector insert into each outlet pipe from Jegs ( P/N 176-3D125R) made by Car Chemistry, Inc. . These are designed for street applications and/or race engines where there is a need to reduce noise. Each side was fitted easily into my dual exhaust piping after the muffler. For additional sound deadening, a person can also install stainless steel wool but I just went with the inlet disk block-off which comes with each collector insert. They also come with another disk insert which can also be installed on the collector outlet for the quietest results. I do not have a db meter but I believe I achieved about a 5 db drop in noise and my son likes it. I may install these also in my 88GT but it has the larger magnaflow V8 designed muffler and already has a quieter sound. The cost of each collector was $60.90 and I believe well worth the price.. just go to the Jegs website and check them out, they have smaller diameter collector inserts if your pipes are smaller.

Is this what you installed? How do you prevent them from rattling?

Curtisk1060 APR 05, 10:20 PM
Yes, that is exactly what I installed, it fit fairly snug into my 2.5 inch outlet pipes., First I lightly sanded the disks then also de-burred my exhaust pipes. I then welded the disk with the hole in it to the inlet side of the insert, and did not install the disc that had no hole in it on the outlet side of the insert, but according to the installation instructions, that would have made it as quiet as possible had I done that. They recommend tack welding the assembly in place or bolting them in place but mine just fit tight enough that I just slightly pounded them into my straight section of tail pipes before they turned 90 degrees to my outlet tips so they cannot go anywhere. I did not experience any rattle at all. The instructions provided were very easy to understand, hope that helps..

My brain was stuck in the 80's when I saw the "3 disk collector". I thought you had a Supertrapp exhaust installed and you were adding rings

Looks like you may be reducing the sound but by adding a severe restriction. The 3800 needs good exhaust flow or you can burn a piston or valve.

Why not just install a small resonator?

Thanks for the input, these also sound like a good idea, I am not sure until checking if I have the 12 inches required between the outlet of the spintek muffler and the 90 degree turn to the tailpipe extensions but if so, these would be worth a try. I would like to know if any member has tried these in addition to their mufflers, without a CAT to see how effective they are for noise reduction??

I installed one of these ahead of the Spintech muffler on my 3.4dohc install. I haven't started it yet; -5db would be great. The exhaust volume is just too much when I start it in the garage facing out to the alley behind my house. Fine inside the car, but my neighbors probably don't appreciate it.

Those were the shortest ones listed on Summit (12" & 10") and I assume that is the smallest they make. I have used them on multiple vehicles including a Fiero and they are installed on cars from the factory, so yes they work but the level of effectiveness is obviously going to vary depending on application, so I wouldn't expect a drastic reduction in noise in your case, however it will help and often eliminates obnoxious crackling/popping.

I tried wrapping the exhaust pipes with DEI exhaust wrap. It made a significant reduction in exhaust sound without adding any restriction. Restrictions can cost you valuable horsepower. This could mean a win or a loss in a race.
