So I may have to start commuting again probably 200 miles a day. I have an 87 duke and typically get 300-350 miles or so out of a tank. Id really hate to have to go to the gas station every day. So I started playing with the idea of adding a tank. I know the front is all crumple zone and a front end collision could cause fuel to explode everywhere.

I searched and found this

he says "i used jegs #547-250-012-01, its 12 gallon and fits real nice. you dont need to do alot cutting for it."
looking and seeing the real Indy Pace Cars seemed to have about a 10 gal up front.
However when I first started looking at this I was thinking id probably need a 20 gal to make it practical. There seems like no way I could practically do that after seeing that 12 gallon. That 12 is 10x16x17.5 a 20 is 10x24x19.75 ... Im dubious that the AC dryer is even still in the car in the picture. To add to the complexity I live in CA. on cars of the Fiero's vintage they do a pressure test of the system. This means I would have to use this as a transfer tank and make sure I have extra check valves to make sure its a one way only transfer tank....Starting to think 2 5gal jerry cans fit in the trunk just fine. Perhaps this is not practical

A commute of 200 miles a day is 1000 miles per week. Even at 35 mpg thats about 29 gallons of gas at CA $6/gallon gas it comes to $174 per week in fuel. That sounds economically unfeasible for just about anyone and you also expect 1000 miles per week reliability from a 35 yr old vehicle????
This post just doesn't sound right.

I own a Fiero im not quite right While it is a 35 yo vehicle in some aspects the Engine, Trans, Suspension, Brakes, Lines are all under 15k and replaced within the last few years. The commute should not be this way for longer than a few months but i will be looking to relocate the housing market is just a bit wonky at the moment.

If the job pays well enough why not just stay in location? That is a long commute my friend.

Back to topic, I am not sure I would go through the effort to add an additional tank. You would still need to fill up what every other day? Is that really worth the effort?

My current commute is 100 miles a day but its 2-3 hours on my return and 1.5 hours on my way in. Ive been doing this for 10 years )not counting the last 2) I may have the opportunity to swap jobs and it is 200 miles and google says its reverse commute and an average of 2 hours each way so its about the same time wise except im moving also they have some other sites that are only 40 miles from my house (60min) that i should be able to spend some/more time at and eventually get some wfh time. This is all fine and dandy but i like to plan for the worst. Also this place gives me opportunity to grow and there is affordable housing closer that I could pursue (its just not the right time to do that today) My current place there is no and never will be affordable housing. Im starting to look at those 2017+ bolts that just got recalled. as Dennis pointed out 174 a week in fuel thats 700 a month i could probably get a car payment at 300 or so and the place has free charging..

I understand the situation but maintenance and wear must also be added into the cost. Have you priced tires lately? Then add in a monthly oil change and understand that time is also valuable. It sounds like going electric may be the best option if they have free charging at the destination and provide a charge that will last 2 hours of driving time say with the A/C on all that time.. Then you must recharge again at home overnight. Can you set up a fast charger there? Sounds like you are faced with a difficult decision.

Added Tank Isn't just in the Fiero "Crush Zone..."
Gasoline weighs ~ 6lb/gallon
Above 10gl tanks puts 60lb On the Front Axle affecting steering, braking and more.

Worse...
Now take your and crap in the trunk etc weight.
Then + 60lb gas + weight of tank/pump assem - weight spare tire you remove.
Total That

Find GVWR label on the door but most are bad.... For Fiero GVWR assumes ~ two 190lb people and ~ 100lb cargo = ~ 480lb

Good bet the car is overloaded that also negatively affects steering braking etc.
Is same problem when people what to carry more stuff in recent AC question https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/145987.html and many other threads w/ hauling/towing stuff.
