'84 Fiero 4 cycle auto trans slipping in 3rd (Page 1/1)

Hello all! I recently acquired a very clean '84 with the three speed auto.

I came in to it knowing there are issues with the transmission and I found a used transmission locally, but before I start down that road I wanted to get your opinions...

Symptoms:
  • 1st and 2nd gear function perfectly when shifted manually. Reverse works great. There is no delay between shifting forward or reverse.

  • However, when in Drive, the trans acts as if it is slipping when I try to accelerate (if its in 2nd no slipping at all). RPM's hold solid if speed is maintained, but when I accelerate the RPMs rise and then settle back down once the load is off on level ground.

My experience tells me this is the bands in 3rd gear just being worn out. But the fluid is clean and at the correct level.

Any chance this is some other issue, or should I just start on the replacement project?

EDIT: I know for a fact there is a vacuum leak in some of the hoses leading to the intake. Going to fix those asap... Could that cause this issue?

In case anyone is searching in future with the same problem, I adjusted the shift position cable at the throttle body and that fixed my issue completely. Shifts smooth and firm through all the gears.

TV cable can cause this because affects hydro pressure in the trans.

Never use Gas Pedal trying to adjust TV cable. If you don't break the pedal or throttle cable... throttle cable stretches and F'up the TV Cable adjust.

TV Cable adjust button often jams too. Make sure you clean that before adjusting.

Adjust...
Push button to let jacket to move by itself. Should move easily by itself just pushing the button.
Slowly rotate TB/TBI to WOT and watch the jacket to ratchet.
If doesn't move when button push, ratchet or very hard to ratchet then adjust is binding and need more cleaning. Or adjuster is bad from heat/oil damage and need replacement.

Shifting problems, especially later/no up shift, can also be the governor in VSS attachment.

Plus the pedal and/or throttle cable often have problems and TB/TBI don't reach WOT when "Floor the Pedal."
