1985 V6 Losing Fuel Pressure (Page 1/1)

Hello,

I’ve got a 1985 V6, that won’t run and found that when I turn the key to the on position I get adequate fuel pressure but it very quickly drops. I verified that the injectors are not leaking, and there is no fuel coming from any of the lines or fittings.

I just replaced the fuel pump, injectors, and pressure regulator, and it ran for a few miles and then stopped running. Any suggestions on what it could be? I read somewhere that the fuel pump could be letting fuel back into the tank but that doesn’t seem likely to me with a new pump.

Thanks!

What condition was the short piece of flexible hose in that connects to the fuel pump inside the tank? And was it the proper submersible hose?

The wrong type of hose will eventually rot/split.

After I had gotten my '84 running again back in 2014, it's basically sat around as an "extra" Fiero while I've been driving my Formula. However, a year ago it wouldn't start when I went to move it, and it quickly became apparent that lack of fuel pressure was again the issue.

I had my suspicions as to the cause. I waited another year to drop the tank (as it's such a damn nuisance), and sure enough, the short length of hose in the tank has indeed ruptured.

I'm kicking myself for not replacing it with a known piece of SAE 30R10 submersible fuel line (Gates 27093, NAPA H209) when I had the tank dropped six years ago, but I had erroneously assumed the existing hose was the proper stuff back then as it appeared to be alright. In retrospect, looking at my earlier images in this thread, it was probably already showing signs of swelling.

I still haven't determined where I'll be buying the 30R10 submersible fuel line from. There are fewer options here than in the States. I'll probably be fortunate if I can buy a chunk for $30 minimum. That's for a foot of the stuff. I only need two inches of it, but I don't believe I have much choice in the matter. If anyone in Canada knows a good source for this specialty hose, please let me (and every other Canadian here) know.

I took the following shot of another fuel pump assembly I have which is from an '88 duke. You can see how this particular piece of hose has also deteriorated/dissolved.
