First start in 3 years - coolant question (Page 1/1)

I started up my 87 gt for the first time in 3 years with pretty much no drama although i think ì may have an exhaust manifold leak but I am checking that out later.

I had it idling in the garage to get everything up to operating temperature. The radiator fan kicked in and eventually warm coolant started making its way to the radiator so everything seemed ok at that point. But then it started a gurgling sound and a sound as if someone was sloshing back and forth water in a container.

So probably a stupid question, but I assume I have air in the coolant system? I ask as i did not do anything to the coolant system except for changing the thermostat as the coolant and water pump were changed before i bought it and i drove it home and do not remember all the gurgling and sloshing back and forth sounds.

Sounds like air in the system.
Be sure the expansion tank is at proper level and the hose between the tank and the radiator cap is not leaking.
How does the coolant look?

Thanks for the reply. Coolant is nice and clean.

So I read through some other posts and as I did with the car sitting next to me, I heard all of the coolant in the overflow being sucked back into the radiator meaning the system is not full and air is in the system. I popped open the rad cap and the rad is not full. Guessing they did not fill it correctly when they changed the water pump so going to go through the steps i found in other posts on filling it from the back and runningvwithou the tstat and checking again.

One of these days I will get this thing back on the road....

Although The Ogre will say it's all unnecessary ... These are the steps I follow.

Thanks Patrick, funny enough those are the steps that I was going to use.

Ya i think air in the system is the issue for sure. Pulled out the tstat and pretty much no coolant. Put 1/4 gallon in for what i have on hand right now and it took it all so off to get more coolant tomorrow.

I just add coolant at the rear and make sure overflow bottle at front is at lower line (cold line). Leave thermostat out for a couple days while driving. Check on overflow coolant bottle level a few times. Then insert thermostat. Check level in front. Done
