Basic '84 brake upgrade (Page 1/1)
Chris_B_84se APR 19, 12:17 PM
So it's just about time to do a brake job on my '84, I've noticed lately with just city driving that I'm having a lot of pedal travel and having to really stand in to stop at a light. This has raised the idea of doing some upgrades. I've read some posts about the S10 booster/ M.C upgrade but have heard mixed reviews on it and after reading Theogre's tunnel #6 page it raised some questions and concerns.

My overall thought for a setup, while using stock callipers and rotors would be, S10 Booster + M.C, '88 proportion valve, a good set of pads (Thinking Porterfield R4-S) and SS Flex lines.

Would this be an alright setup? Any thoughts and comments are appreciated!

P.S my car has a ZZP Stage 2 L67 w/ F23

Brakes are a safety issue and the stock system was designed for the car. Upgrades are not necessary and may not improve things, but could make it worse. The 88 proportioning valve should definitely not be used with stock '84 calipers.

A popular upgrade is the GrandAm/Berreta.
Downside is the parking brake goes bye-bye.
Upside is vented rotors, better calipers.
Must use proper master cylinder.

The booster upgrade? Not until the rest of the system is brought up to snuff, and then you won't need it

I haven’t heard many good things about the GA/ beretta, the field sounds more negative on them on the note of safety.

So what would be the negative affects? If the callipers are supplied more power, is it risk of blowing seals, or?

Your welcome to your opinion on the GA brakes, I used them on my 86 SE for years and lots of miles and they were twice as good as the freshly rebuilt stock system they replaced.
Not an endorsement for the modification to your car, just my experience and the experience s of others I know with this mod.

I see that you are from Canada, I don't know what the laws are there concerning brake system modifications.

The 88 bias valve is set up for the 88 calipers which have the same caliper bores on all four corners, unlike the pre-88's that do not. If you use it on pre-88, the brake bias will not be optimal.

Thanks, I’ll look into the GA set up further. We’re you running them on all four? Also what size wheel do you run? I’ve got 15s.

So ‘88 Valve is not the way to go. I’ve hear about “removing the spring” in the ‘84 valve to even the bias better. Any experience with this?

I ran the Fiero 15" lace wheels on my 86, but the rotors are Fiero sized ( but vented) so they will fit on any Fiero.
And yes, all four wheels. I had fronts only for a test drive, didn't like it at all, and changed the rears and put the proper master cylinder it.
An 88 bias valve works well with the swap as well, but I didn't use one.

With 215/60 front and 225/60 rears it would just about put you through the windshield in a panic stop.

"upgrades" like large booster Won't fix your pedal problems.
"upgrades" w/ big MC will cause more problems with stock brakes.

Low pedal is often calipers w/ too much pad clearance mostly the on the rear axle.
So Replacing rear calipers is likely required.

But...
"I've noticed lately with just city driving that I'm having a lot of pedal travel and having to really stand in to stop at a light."
Last part is often a leak somewhere in the system. If MC Tank level doesn't drop even a little then leak is likely internal in the MC.
If the Front brakes have problems then they can bind the calipers and/or MC causing similar "failure."

Likely happens more in city driving because whatever is the root cause has less time to "reset." Brake parts gets "hammered" just from road noise between stops and highway has more time to work loose so less obvious to you.

Could be Pad Dragging too and highway driving can work loose and cool off the dragging pad(s) and rotor(s).

Canada Inspection can have different rules by Province etc. They can put a car on a lift and/or use a Brake Dyno looking looking for problems. If they test now will likely fail and w/ most "upgrades" too for any reason like just Seeing have no P-brakes.

Even if "passes" inspection likely GA "upgrade" is illegal in Canada and can cause huge problems after a wreck. Most claim passed or have no inspection in some US States think = legal to rip out P-brake is only fooling themselves in most states.

Brake pads make all the difference.

I have Porterfield R4-S pads (and SS braided brake hoses) on my 84 Indy Pace Car.
I wanted improved braking power while keeping everything else stock on this car.
Great braking and little dust!! VERY happy with them.
