Performance Sounding Muffler? (Page 1/1)

Stock '88 GT - Performance Sounding Muffler?

Anyone have a recommendation and possibly a link to a performance sounding muffler that will give my stock '88 Fiero GT 2.8 a bit meaner growl / throat?

Have read enough research and comments from others that say simply removing the Cat is NOT recommended for a wide variety of reasons.

Not looking for any large increase in HP and do not want the stock motor to sound annoying or obscene, just would like it to growl more mean and have more aggressive tone.

Muffler/product recommendations?

Try the Spintech muffler. Low restriction and they have a deep sound. It will take a bit of exhaust work to install one but they can build one the same size as the stock muffler.

Probably not what you're wanting to do... but porting the factory exhaust manifolds to remove the ridiculous restrictions makes a difference with the sound, and adds a few ponies as well.

Unless your factory stainless steel muffler has an issue (I had one on an '86 GT which developed a "wap, wap" noise), replacing it with an aftermarket muffler which will rot eventually isn't the best move IMO.

I quite like how my Formula sounds with the factory muffler and a cat. Example Here.

You already have a performance sounding muffler with quad trumpet outlets, you are going about it the wrong way, you got it backwards... its better to replace the 36-year-old original catalytic convertor with a new modern high-flow cat (less restriction & more sound) and leave the nice original stainless muffler and tailpipes alone, because the muffler is all carbon'ed up anyways and not doing much muffle'ing anymore, plus it is easier and less expensive to replace the cat than the muffler. (note: this only applies if your stock system is in good condition, if not disregard this message)

My GT still has the stock stainless system with modern high-flow cat and sounds great, better/louder than with original cat, and I get compliments all the time.

PS: That rear camera is cool, I need to get one of those, would be fun with some smooth twisty country roads.

What actually makes the camera I temporarily mounted in the back "cool" IMO is that it records the audio in stereo. Makes a big difference with the sound (when being played back over decent speakers). You might enjoy this autocross video where I combine front and rear facing camera footage, but use the rear mounted camera audio throughout the entire video.

Does that Sony device have a option to plug in for external microphone? Or is the microphone internal only?

PS: For folks looking for aftermarket convertor options I would check out Rodney's kits first and he also has adapters and connectors to make install easier if you want to use a more expensive convertor from places like Summit Racing.

It has no input for an external mic. Fortunately, the internal stereo mic is excellent. I also have a Kodak Zi8 which I experiment with. Its internal mono mic is average, but it also has an external stereo mic input, as well as auto/manual control of audio input levels.
