Chinese Rotor Blew Apart (Page 1/1)
Dennis LaGrua MAY 04, 07:30 PM
I have a friend who sent me a picture of a Chinese made rotor that just came apart on his car. I have been in the car hobby a long time and I have never seen anything as bad as this. When buying repair parts it is getting quite difficult to find quality items.

I worked at a parts store for a while, I've seen that bad and worse.

That photo is why I always buy the best rotor available for any car (severe duty) with highest carbon content (so they don't warp / break) and go with a middle grade OEM replacement semi-metallic pad.

This is often more then just "Chinese Rotor Blew Apart."
I've seen this happen before and w/ all US parts.

Look at the rotor pad working area how way worm out... Likely No pad or very worn and back metal or had rivets hitting if has them.
Caliper likely have problem(s) too trying to flex/bend the rotor. Like Fiero sliders are bound bad and caliper shell can't move and piston pressure try to force rotor to push toward the wheel.

Either/both can "overload" the rotor and break starts at any stress points.

A more common fail is at the part where hat meet the rotor working area.
For above reasons plus Some brakes when pads are bad the back metal or caliper itself act as parting off cutter for a lathe. When metal is cut thin finally break.

Drum brakes, often still use for rear axle, can have similar failures and drum can blow out.

I bet that sounded like a train wreck.

Looks like it was made using the finest Chinesium metal available!

My friend told me that when the rotor exploded it sounded like a truck crashed into him. He then pulled over and called a flatbed to get the car home. He was lucky that this happened around town and not at highway speed. This experience only confirms the type of cheap garbage parts being imported these days.

Luckily I have about 12 spare used OEM rotors for my 88s

Well the pad is very worn, the rotor isn't wearing evenly and it's clearly had a lot of salt and rust.

Not saying the rotor isn't poor quality, just observing what's in the picture.

That is horrible looking... I've never had a rotor do that, but I can only imagine how damaging that could be to the wheel and everything else...
