Take the Poll! (Page 1/3)

Most of us at one time or another have had to use something to prop up the decklid due to spring failure. I have been doing some research for a project and was wondering what was your favorite item to use as a decklid prop? I look forward to seeing all of the answers. Thanks, gentlemen!

Four foot piece of 2x2 in the 90's when I was younger. Now I use a golf club while I am waiting for Rodney Dickman parts.

Second I still have a Four foot piece of 2x2 in the trunk. I had to tighten my springs and dont need it unless its super windy. .

That looks very interesting. Where did you find something like that?

Its a common part made by Lisle. Available on Amazon and at auto supply stores. Best part, its USA made. I got tired of the deck lid coming down on me. This part locks the strut solid.

When you have correct counter springs for your deck the deck will stay open most times. Wind may close the lid in some cases...
But This isn't just for Fiero. "Trunk" Lids and some Hood setups for a lot of other vehicles have same issue.

Above Lisle tool is for Gas supports holding many Hatch Backs and some others. WHEN the Gas supports are bad and barely hold w/o wind load etc or does nothing... This tool isn't a great idea Nor is any other Aftermarket or DIY propping as easy to hit them and heavy decks can hurt you easily. You think Fiero is Heavy? Have same problem w/ many "Hatch Backs" from Vega Pinto and Gremlin to many Current SUV and Mini Vans that Weighting 100 to 200+ pounds.

Even 1 or 2 side or rear doors that opens sideways for vans etc can have this problem.
Is why Many Semi and others w/ double doors have extra latches to hold open when backing into loading docks etc. like...
(source https://www.industrialhwe.c...older-stainless.asp)
Wind, gravity or momentum can make big door to slam open or shut and if hits you can put you in hospital.

Many Overhead doors for Commercial Vehicles have Warnings that can't move the truck w/ Door Open. I've seen many ignore this and OH slams Down and self-destroys if only thing it's slams. (If you rent a vehicle and wreck the door this way, expect heavy bill to fix/replace it even if you bought extra Insurance.)

Is Why Some Employers will write up or fire dock workers and truck drivers and others for not securing open doors that damage anything Including Private vehicles use for work or just on the property.
