Steering wheel paint (Page 1/1)

Does anyone have any recommendations for paint to refinish the metal portion of a GT steering wheel? I'm going to be recovering a wheel for my GT, but the metal portion is somewhat rusted and I don't want nice new leather with a rusted, peeling wheel...

Have you considered taking the existing finish off back to completely bare metal and then blueing the spokes and hub with gun blueing. Done right, it leaves a tough coat of black oxide that resists rusting.

If it were me, I'd use VHT wrinkle paint. That way you don't have to worry about the flat, smooth black paint getting scratched or scuffed. Wrinkle paint looks good and hides any defects.

I've found that the best rattle can paint is from Duplicolor.

Edit for spelling

I am going to strip the old finish, I don't want the new finish to flake off due to a failed substrate. While I'm not opposed to a blued finish for some parts, I'd like to keep the steering wheel as close to stock as possible.

I am considering the VHT wrinkle paint, and Rustoleum has a textured finish as well.

The VHT instructions call for a 20 minute cure time at 200F, and I'd rather not try to remove the plastic coating from the steel core of the wheel. The Rustoleum doesn't require a hot cure. I need to go to Lowe's after I finish doing laundry and see what it looks like in person...

Ah, I misunderstood. Usually when I hear people need to repaint the wheel, I assume just the hub. You're removing all the material down to bare steel for the entire wheel?
You can use something very durable like VHT satin black epoxy paint. It should be available at auto parts store or online.

Well, Lowe's was out of the Rustoleum. They did have Krylon Fusion All-in-One textured. I have done a test spray on some scrap, We'll see what it looks like once it dries...
