What is this? (Pics inside) 3.4L engine with coolant leak (Page 1/1)

I'm chasing down a coolant leak on a 3.4L. I thought it was coming from behind the timing cover but then I noticed this odd silver quarter sized disc that seems to be held down on the edge by a 10 mm bolt. I'm not familiar with this thing but bells went off when I saw it move slightly. Whatever it is, it's not completely tight.

What is it, and could it be the source of my coolant leak?

That is the port for the cam sensor on the 3.4 block.
It should not leak coolant, oil yes, but not coolant.

OK, thank you for that. It's apparently not the source of my coolant leak, but it does raise some questions for me.

There is no sensor at the port. Is this not used on the Fiero?

Is the silver disk shown in my pictures typical in the 3.4 swap?

Since this one is a bit loose how would I seal it properly?

It's not used on the 3.4, as installed in the Fiero. But all 3.4s will have either a "dead" sensor, or that plug.

If you remove the 10mm, you might be able to get the plug out.
The only oil likely to escape will be any that gets slung off the timing gear or chain. I would be more concerned about water getting in, if you pressure wash your engine, or whatever.
If you can't get the plug out, just wipe some silicone around the edges of it, where it sits.

I believe that most 3.4L swaps just keep the old sensor in place as it has an O ring on the sensor that seals it. Certainly not the source of a coolant leak. The front timing cover might leak as the water pump goes feeds through that area.

My 3.4 didn't have a sensor as it came out of the Camaro, though parts lists show one is available. I even purchased a cam sensor in preparation for my 7730 ECM conversion, I ran mine on a distributor for years and recently went to DIS like the original 3.4, but the cam sensor isn't used in the 7730 conversions, either.

Coolant maybe just pooling there from leak above like T-stat house where bolted to intake.

T-stat looks like installed w/ RTV... Worse, Gasket w/ RTV.
RTV has rules or will fail to seal sooner or little later. Top 2...
1. Clean to metal or whatever coating on parts w/ brake clean.
2. Do Not use it w/ any gasket unless a gasket set say use it in specific areas. Example: Oil Pan sides meet "rubber" front and/or back on some engines.
