Brake Booster (Page 1/6)
hunter29 MAY 10, 08:17 PM
Thinking of replacing the brake booster. Looking at the FSM I did not see any indication the MC needs to be removed. I don’t see how this is possible, or is it ?

Also looking for replacement advice. What not to buy, best booster available, etc…

Thanks

The M/C needs to be detached from the booster, but not from the brake lines.

Excellent, check your PM’s

The S-10 brake booster upgrade is highly recommended. You'll need to swap the mounting bracket and make a slight bit of clearance but ones are available ready to go from a guy here on this forum.

Sardonix is the guy that puts the boosters together for a direct fit. If he can't help you buy a Tough Stuff 2232N brake booster kit. Summit carries them. Remove the bracket on the old Fiero booster and bolt it to the new booster. It will be a tight fit installing it but with a hammer you can free up a tiny bit of space where the booster sits along the wheel well . BIG difference in braking power

The S-10 booster should only be installed on brake systems that are in proper working order - it should NEVER be installed on a system as the first step to improve braking performance.

Proper working order includes unglazed rotors, new pads, freely moving caliper slide pins, proper E-brake adjustment, new brake fluid, proper bleeding and proper vacuum level at the booster.

Remember too that part of the braking system is the tires, they should be in good condition.

A Hammer ????

First follow Joe's advise on a system check in making sure the MC, rotors, calipers, pads and lines are in good working order. I assume that you have done this. The object then is to improve braking action and pedal feel with the larger booster. In my installs it certainly has done this. The S-10 brake booster has a slightly larger diameter than the Fiero S-10 booster. To install it you need to slightly dent in a small section of the wheel well area to make it fit. If you do it correctly this will not be noticed when the booster is installed. There is much info here in the archives on how to do this but realize that the larger brake booster doesn't improve the inherent efficiency of the braking system. It only gives you better brake pedal response.

The area to be moved with the hammer is the top of the lower frame rail, isn't it?
