Replacing Thermostat (Page 1/1)

So I noticed that my car had been showing signs that it was starting to overheat. There's plenty of coolant in it, so i thought I would change out the thermostat. Got a new one today and put it in. Took it for a drive around the block to just be sure but then the needle pegged out at max temp. The motor didn't feel any hotter than it normally does when I would drive it before. Is this not a thermostat issue and maybe something else? Any help would be great, as I now need to drive this for a little since my truck got a tree dropped on it.

Pull the thermostat and drive it around a bit, first making sure that the radiator, expansion tank and engine are full.

Recheck and fill as needed.

Be sure that the hose from the radiator overflow to the expansion tank is not leaking!

After the system maintains level, pop the t-stat back into it.

Also, make sure that the thermostat cap inner disc is free to rotate, so that when the t-stat cap is tightened it doesn't twist the handle on the t-stat.

If your temp gauge was accurate, then you would've had coolant boiling out of the overflow reservoir. I suspect you have either a gauge or sender issue.

That's what I figured, but better safe than sorry, so I hurried back home.

I DID hear some slight bubbling when I opened the hood, coming from the overflow.

Keep in mind that every time your engine heats up and cools down, coolant is being transferred back and forth from the coolant reservoir. That's one reason why olejoedad suggested to you... "Be sure that the hose from the radiator overflow to the expansion tank is not leaking!"

You can check engine temperature with a laser pyrometer. Focus it on your radiator and it will give a good idea if the engine is overheating. You can buy them at Harbor Freight or online for around $20.

So I think i might have the issue fixed. I think i just need to add some more coolant. Man, this has not been a good week lol.
