Exhust studs (Page 1/1)
hunter29 MAY 11, 10:19 PM
I’m having a hard time finding exhaust manifold studs,

M8 x 1.25 x 50MM

I’m unsure of what kind, steel, stainless, black steel?

And where can I get them, kit form would be better.

Anyone??

Dorman 03411 stud and nut kit. Available online or your local auto parts store. Come 10 to a kit, so need two for complete V6.

Be aware that you don't want to use a stud above the A/C compressor near the coolant crossover tube.
A bolt will allow you to remove the manifold easily at a later date without disassembling na lot of stuff.

Thanks guys, bear with me please, still learning...

So I need eleven studs and one bolt, is there a Dorman P# for the bolt? All I'm seeing listed is for the 2.5 ( The fiero store has it listed)

Also it is my understanding the A/C compressor needs to be dropped and moved out of the way, is this correct ?

And do I need to spray the new gaskets with a sealer of some kind ?, I read something about a copper sealant...

Oh almost forgot, do I leave the heat shield / water shield off the front manifold ? Pro's /con's

Thanks so much, your help is much appreciated..

When I built my 3.4L turbo engine, I used stainless steel bolts not studs but I recall a couple of them needed sealant on them to avoid coolant leaks from the head. Studs may be a better way to mount the manifolds but there have been no problems so far.

The following thread might be informative for you, despite the fact that some people don't know the front from the back of the engine.

Factory recall heat shield on back of engine?

See here

My car doesnt have AC so I used studs for all 12 spots

coating the gaskets in a paper thin layer of orange high temp RTV should help it seal better

Be careful of leaves and crap accumulating in the front heat shield. I left it on because the engineers designed it to be there

I dont think the studs need thread sealant? They dont go in the water jacket? The M11 head bolts do but not the exhaust manifold studs? Maybe someone who knows more can chime in

Thanks for the info guys, very helpful. I did not know about the metal to metal with the shield.

This could be my problem. It’s a little tick, small leak maybe. I finally found evidence of a leak I believe.

When installing new plugs and wires I found what looks like black carbon on two of the metal spark plug boot covers.

Only I did not notice them until I was putting them on the new wires. But I’m pretty sure they came from the front.

I have heard the bolts can come lose, perhaps all I need to do is tighten them ? Or is it too late.

I need to investigate further.

You all have been helpful, thank you..

Looking over the recall letter from August 1990 it states the exhaust manifold (s) would be replaced to bring it up to 1987/88 spec.

Anyone know if the manifolds were any different ?

Orange high temp rtv should not be used on exhaust gaskets, nor is it recommended by the manufacturer.

Oxygen sensor fouling could be a problem if you do.
