Door Ajar Light Stuck On (Page 1/1)
88FormulaDuke MAY 17, 12:55 AM
I recently bought my 88 2.5 Coupe, and the previous owner just had a piece of electrical tape over the “Ajar” light. Lol!!
What turns that on?
The driver and passenger doors have a switch on the door jam. I’m assuming those are fine, when the doors open and close the dome light works as expected.
There is no switch on the rear deck lid.
There is a switch on the front hood, but pressing it while the hood is open doesn’t affect the light. The switch *feels* fine when pushing it by hand. I haven’t yet figured out how to access the wiring to check with a volt/ohm meter.
I also don’t have a wiring schematic for the car, so I’m guessing that’s all there is.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Don't be too sure about that.

Rear decklid ajar switch

The front hood switch, the rear deck switch and the two door switches will trigger the AJAR light.

My Formula does the "AJAR light flash dance" on bumpy roads due to the front compartment switch.

I typically find it to be the front compartment switch that causes this issue. It gets some corrosion built up that then allows connection even when pressed. Open front and spin the button 1/4 turn each way a couple dozen times and see if that helps. Then make sure your hood is not adjusted too high. If the problem still happens id start with pulling that button and removing one of the wires (its also possible someone has spun the switch too many times causing the wires to twist together on the back and shorting together.)

Maybe this helps.

Switch "ear" on the truck latch wears out if open a lot then can't push the connects.
Push the "ear" fully up by hand to test.
Switch can break too.

Door switch is on the door latch. Not on front door jam.
But is small connection hidden by foot trim on low A pillar.

Hood switch loves to rot from "rust" etc.
is a standard jam switch to turn On Ajar and front compartment light.
When switch is bad 1 or both connects can get hit wiper parts etc and turn on.
