Pre '88 front wheel bearing outer race replacement advice (Page 1/1)

Did the rear brakes recently so just replacing the front pads so all four are new. Decided to install new wheel bearings while I was in there. I was able to drive out the inner wheel bearing races without issue, but have run into a problem with the outers As viewed from the inner hub bearing side, the outer bearing race (where it sits inside the hub) has almost no visible edge showing where a drift is used to drive it out. I'm talking about just a few thousandths of an inch exposed. I've attempted to use a wide variety of drifts/punches, but nothing will fit up against the old race to drive it out. Anyone else done this job and what did you use? Car is currently apart in my garage hoping someone will have an idea of what I should try.

It's not going to help this time, but if you have a die grinder with a carbide burr, I recommend carving out two notches in the step the race seats on. This will give you a nice large access to drive out the next race.

This time, a semi-wide punch with a sharp edge is the best thing.

Weld a bead inside the bearing race.

When the molten metal cools, it shrinks.

The race will become much easier to knock out, if it doesn't fall out.

Thanks FieroJimmy. I've got a Dremel die grinder, but hadn't thought of what you suggested. I'll give it a try.
