Do I need to drop the cradle to get my CV axle out? (Page 1/1)

Trying to replace my CV axle but unsure if I have enough clearance from just dropping the suspension.

You don't need to drop the cradle. You can separate the knuckle from the tie rod and ball joint if it's an 84-87 model or the trailing and lateral links if it's an 88. You will also have to disconnect the emergency brake cable, and in the case of the 88, I think you would need to disconnect the rear sway bar from the knuckle, if so equipped.

Be sure to save the axle nut washer. They are no longer available. A new nut is required. It usually comes with the axle. This article deals with replacing the hub, but there is some helpful information that covers the final steps of installing the axle into the hub. http://www.gafiero.org/bbs/...13.msg31131#msg31131

To prevent damaging your hub bearings, please, torque the axle nut to 75 ft lb while the suspension is off the ground. Install the wheel without its center cap, lower the car to the ground but do not let it roll. Now, torque the axle nut to 200 ft lb.

make sure to drain the tranny fluid before removing the axle.
