Low RPM High Gear after Alt Swap (Page 1/1)

Greetings. I swapped the alternator on my '85 SE i4 the other day, seemingly with no issue. I have noticed that at 4th and 5th gear, as I accelerate, it seems like there is a substantial loss of power. I replaced the Alternator with a stock one, the 96 amp (92 or 94 amp maybe), which is what I think was on it (old one had no sticker, was not the original, and appeared rebuilt). I am not sure what it could be, though maybe the belt is too tight? I did hold the alternator slightly tighter with a prybar, though, it still seems to move freely and doesn't bind or seem to be burning. I am not sure what to try, though I did get a new set of wires, as one of the wires came loose while driving and has a burned spot on it, though it appears working as well after being snapped back on. The car runs smoothly in idle, and just fine in anything under 45 mph, but once you get to about 45 mph, that's all she's got, even when floored.

Sounds to me like your cat (or muffler) has plugged up.

low fuel pressure may do that. How is the fuel filter?

I'm embarrassed to say, but I did fix my issue. It's always the simplest solution. One of the plug wires was not fully snapped onto the distributor cap. IT was still sitting on the distributor, and it looked fully snapped on, but as it turns out, it was in fact, not snapped on all the way. Now I just have to fix the radiator leak I noticed after my test drive...

Your definition of "smoothly" must be quite a bit different than mine.
