Muncie No Reverse? (Page 1/1)

I bought a 1986 Fiero GT a month and a half ago. I noticed that the shifter doesn't go into reverse. It doesn't run because the fuel pump is out. The seller claims that the clutch is also burned out. What could the issue be? Does the clutch have to operate for it to go into reverse?

The clutch doesn't need to be actuated, as the engine is not running.

When in the reverse gate, push down on the shifter as you pull the shifter back.

Burned out is not a very technical term. The clutch could be worn out or stuck on something, or perhaps the throw out bearing is broken...or the cables may be at fault, but you will learn more when the engine runs.

This may be obvious, but you are not pushing to the right and down, are you? If so, then you're doing it wrong.
Getting to reverse on my 4 spd is a bit difficult for anyone not familiar with it. You have to be a bit more forceful pushing it over than you do just getting to first and second gears. Apparently the shifter design can cause this. I haven't tried it, but there's a rebuild kit for this possible cause https://rodneydickman.com/p....php?products_id=483

Disconnect the shift and select cables at the tranny, then you can independently test the shifter and transmission in regards to going into reverse.
