3.4L timing cover gasket question , (Page 1/1)

Jenny's 86 GT with a 3.4L swap (by the previous owner) started leaking coolant a few weeks ago and I am attempting the repair. This is not something I have done before.

The leak seems to be coming from behind the timing chain cover. I removed the water pump and then the timing cover. Not a fun job. Now I am finding that there is a gasket at the bottom of the timing cover that is shared by the oil pan.

It looks like now I will have to drop the oil pan and replace that gasket as well unless there is another way to do this. Is it possible to replace the shared part of the oil pan gasket only without dropping the pan? A YouTube video I saw said nothing about dropping the oil pan but did mention replacing the upper timing chain cover and then using RTV at the bottom where it mates with the oil pan. So I'm wondering if I can just use RTV, or perhaps trimming a new gasket to replace just that shared portion and seal with RTV.

I've done the job twice. Just used some RTV on that bottom section and was good each time.

Like mentioned above, a little bit of RTV along the bottom of the timing cover should be fine. No need to disturb the oil pan gasket.
