Oil filter info (Page 1/3)

I was changing the filter on my 3.4 F-body swap 85 Fiero- trying to turn it with a strap wrench and the AC/Delco filter started collapsing- after some arm flapping and use of a french dictionary, I was able to un-screw it with a rubber strap between the wrench and the filter.

This is the same crap that happened when Allied Signal bought up Fram oil filters- the management had a meeting and demanded that they cut costs- by thinning the metal making up the can. A bunch of people wrecked their engines because the canisters burst.

I will never buy Fram even though they now have an Up-level version....Once you screw people by cheaping-out that is it for me.

AC/Delco used to be one of the best oil filter brands- I was using them on all my vehicles- including my 460 Ford Jet boat engine- never again- All of their filters are now marked with the letter "E" (Economy) and made in China.

If you have a high performance vehicle, may I suggest Mobil 1 Filters....For my Fiero V6 it would be Mobil M1-201...They are a bit expensive but are made in Usa...wherever that country is located....($10 at Walmart)

Branded Wix or Hastings are still top quality filters. The Mobil One filters are made by Champion Labratories (USA and ASIAN production). When I was in the parts business the distributor I worked for sold alot of Champ Filters and we never had a problem.

Wix and Purolator are good quality. NAPA filters are made by them. Usa is a city in Japan. Due to that, a long time ago manufacturers changed from Made In USA to Made In U.S.A.

Watched an episode of engine masters, they did some extensive testing on oil filters on the engine dyno. Believe it or not K&N offered up the best results for flow and filtering capability. Never been a fan of Fram, but I have used K&N filters for a while now and never had issues.

Too tight to remove? Even "Crushing the Can..."

1. Blame/Flame in the Installer.

Because didn't oil the Gasket or Tighten way to Tight.
Either or Worse Both will make Crushing the Filter much likely later.

Filter Only need ~ 1/2 turn more after goes starts to go tight by hand.

Example from Fiero Owner book:
quote
7. Coat the sealing gasket of the new filter with oil.
8. Screw on the filter, by hand, until snug.
9. Hand-tighten the filter another 1/2 turn (or whatever filter manufacturer recommends).

In many engine setups many need a tool to tighten because of clearance or hard to reach w/o a tool but many people think tighten until can't turn w/ whatever tool.

Oil on Seal will prevent Seal "welding" to the flange. Some makers added Teflon etc to the seal on better filters that helps too.

2. Blame the changer.
Many use "Standard" strap types wrong. They grab middle of wall that is weakest. Should grab at "top" where metal is thicker and have the dome to support a tool. Even Wix can crush when grab in the middle. Worse Way too many of these are "made wrong" and hard to use even when used near the filter top.

Was a company years ago that make cup tool to fit exact case of specific filter for each brand. (Made of "plastic" w/ metal 3/8" drive hole and Letter inside to ID filter brand etc made for. But no other markings. Fram for Fiero took I.) But now often only cups people buy are cheap stamped metal one from HF etc that often doesn't fit.

Other ones that tighten to hold the top but many are cheap made poorly and have problems too.
"Spring" types that grab like "chinese finger trap" can work but often hard to get filter out of them and not make a mess.
Both of them are often made to remove only.

Is funny people say Fram and others is Cheap and have thin wall cases and worse...
90's JiffyLube and others had, often still have, "beer can" filter cases that's way thinner. Even handling or installing can bend the cases. Most of "quick change" oil chains have gone but not JiffyLube that make filters supper cheap because big enough to contract this to lowest bidder. (JL used "Purolator" but Not the same units sold thru normal retail.)

NAPA also has the “cup” style filter wrench’s… you can put a ratchet on it..
