No crank or clicks from a 1987 tech 4, 5 speed (Page 1/1)

UPDATE
UPDATE.
THE CAR IS RUNNING!
I have an 87 tech 4 5 speed.
It will not turn over at all.
It was running and began to idle rough while I was charging the ac and when I went back to give it a little throttle it died.
No big deal right?
Now it won't crank, click nothing.
The pump primes and lights work.
I checked the battery connections twice, changed the starter and solenoid from a known running car I am dismantling.
Checked the safety neutral switch, bypassed the safety neutral switch tried arching the power from the starter to the solenoid while the ignition was in the rain and in the crank position and nothing!
The car was running and driving and all I did was out on a new ac compressor and charge it!
I can't push start it because it is sitting on some 3 foot tall automobile display ramps in my back yard.
After 2 days of all of this I came to ask advice from you guys. Everytime I do I feel bad to bother everyone but I have tried everything I can and researched it on the pennocks archives.
Is there anything someone can suggest?
I hope it is something simple but I don't know what it could be!
Thanks for any help.
Pat

Do you have power at the starter motor?
handymanpat JUN 04, 08:45 PM
I do, I even tried to arc it to the solenoid which I can see sparks.
Right now I am pulling, sanding and reattaching all grounds around the battery and engine.
I am also sanding down the positive and negative connections to the battery.
It's just so odd I can get internal lights, and the pump priming but no crank.
I will do all of that and post the results.

Almost sounds like the clutch safety switch (and/or the wiring harness for it) isn't allowing a circuit.

I will know something more tomorrow.
IT HAS to be something simple!
I only changed out the ac compressor and it was starting and running fine.
I'm changing out the battery, sanding connections and checking everything.
I should know tomorrow!
Thanks Pat

⚠️ Sanding make connections worse in very near future if not coated w/ silicone or brake grease.

Check clutch switch for volt when key is in start.

Don't even need clutch push for this test.
Measure volts yellow to frame or use test light same way.
No power there likely means I-switch is bad or column have problems and are not pushing/pulling that far enough to start.

I-switch and link in Tilt Column have more things to fail on top of famous loose bolts.

Well, I don't know I got it to go but after sanding all the terminals (and coating them with dialectic grease) and moving and wiggling the wires in that area, I went and turned the key and wouldn't you know IT STARTED!!
The only bad part is what did I do??
It had to have been a ground or bad connection.
I started it 3 times and it just crank and runs beautiful.
The bonus is that the ac runs about 34 degrees.
I appreciate everyone's help and advice.
I tried everything and guess I got lucky.
I was actually afraid that something had gone wrong in the column or ignition cylinder.
I know I wasted 2 days with this car and am sure I replaced stuff I did not need to but I'm glad it's over for now.
Thank you all again.
