Fiero Transmission stuff (Page 1/1)

Hey so this is the first post (that I'm actually going to keep track of) on this website, I'll just get straight to the point. I'm building an 87 Fiero GT with a 3800 SC series 2, and a Getrag 282. I have almost all the parts I need, but I need some guidance on what gear shifter to use (as wrecked 5 speed fieros are impossible to find), as well as what clutch slave cylinder to use. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not sure of the transmission number, but if the 282 is the stock transmission, the shifter can come from any of the 5-speed Fieros. Doesn't matter if it's a V6 or a 4-cylinder. The slave would be for the 86-88 5-speed V6. Rodney Dickman's slave is your best choice by far. If you need to purchase cables, also go with Rodney Dickman's.

Is the 87 GT an automatic now? Is the Getrag 282 from a Fiero or a front wheel drive car?

As previously mentioned a 5 speed shifter from an Izuzu or Getrag will work. The Getrag's have all the stops internal. So you need a shifter that has no stops or detents built in as the 4 speed shifters do. I've never looked at modifying a 4 speed shifter to work with a 5 speed but it might be possible.

I have built brackets to use a 5 speed shifter with 4 speed cables to shift a Quad 4 Getrag 282

It was not automatic, It currently has a 4 speed in it. Hence why I need a 5 speed shifter for the 282. If the stops really are internal, Then I could use absolutely any shifter? The 282 is out of a cavalier by the way.

You can't use the 4-speed shifter. Stops are internal on all Fiero manual transmissions, but the 4-speed shifter has a different design to engage Reverse on the left side instead of on the right side. The 4-speed shifter has been modified to work with a 5-speed by some on this forum.

You can use your current clutch and pressure plate if it's good, but you'll need a Getrag-specific throwout bearing. Also, the slave and cable mounting bracket. Some say to swap out the ECM for a 5-speed ECM, but I ran two 85GT's converted from a 4-speed to a 5-speed and didn't have any issues.

Backup light wiring will need to be reworked from the console area on the 4-speed shifter to the rear backup light switch on the 5-speed transmission.

I can't help you with a shifter but here's what I ended up for a slave cylinder. I have an 88 with a 3800 Series III swap. I have a Spec aluminum flywheel and Stage 3+ clutch with the factory Getrag 5 speed transmission. When the swap was done a Rodney clutch master and slave were installed. I had to make sure that the clutch pedal was on the floor, pedal is not bent, shifting was hard and sometimes it would grind going into reverse. I ended up putting an Isuzu 5 speed slave cylinder in, shifting is much better and it never grinds going into reverse.

Here is bracket I made to use 4 speed cables with a FWD Getrag. The roll pin needs to be removed from the collar on the shifting axle, rotated 90 degrees and brazed to the lever. This is so the pin in the relocated rocker will ride in the slot to get the select mechanism to work. I also used the slave that came with the FWD Getrag. This is the one with an external slave but internal lever on the throw-out shaft. IIRC making my own parts saved about $700.
